Sharad Patil of BJP is new chairperson of MBMC standing committee

MUMBAI: Sharad Patil of the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance got elected as the new chairperson of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) standing committee.

The victory was made possible by the absence of former standing committee chairperson and Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) corporator Raju Bhoir.

The election was held on December 4. Patil of the BJP defeated the Congress candidate Hansukumar Pandey by a vote. Last year, Bhoir was elected as the chairperson following support from the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Seema Jain of the BJP had then abstained from voting and ensuring Bhoir's victory. This time, Bhoir shocked the Congress-NCP by being in the fray for chairperson following support by two BJP corporators. He stayed away at the last minute. The Congress-NCP with seven members fell short of one vote. The Shiv Sena-BJP had eight members.
