Lawyer takes complaint to Pilibhit cops, says Maneka Gandhi slapped him

PILIBHIT : Dharmendra Verma, a lawyer, has taken a complaint to police alleging that he had been slapped, kicked and confined to a room by Pilibhit MP Maneka Gandhi on Thursday, even as the nation celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The MP, on a three-day visit in Pilibhit, flatly denied the allegations.

Verma is a worker of the Samajwadi Party. SP MLA from Barkhera Hemraj Verma and district president of the party Anand Singh Yadav have condemned the attack, saying the MP also exposed her scant regard for democratic norms. The two SP leaders met superintendent of police Sonia Singh.

Offering TOI a copy of his complaint, Verma said he was at his Naugma Pakadia office in Pilibhit in the morning on Thursday, and was just about to set out for Durga Puja when four people arrived on bikes and told him that he had been summoned by Maneka Gandhi. He said he protested that was on his way to Durga Puja celebrations, but the four forced him to meet Gandhi, who detained him in a room, beat and kicked him.

Asked why Maneka Gandhi was so furious with him, the lawyer said he was a Samajwadi Party worker, and had been campaigning about the achievements of chief minister Akhilesh Singh Yadav and SP MLA Hemraj Verma. He said he had also been condemning Maneka Gandhi, as she neglected Pilibhit and did little for her constituency, even as she made exaggerated claims about her work.

SP Sonia Singh told TOI that she received a complaint from Dharmendra Verma against Maneka Gandhi. She said an inquiry will be conducted by circle officer SS Siddhu, and action will be taken on the basis of that report.

Amit Mishra, president of the Central Bar Association, Pilibhit, said the matter related to the dignity of a lawyer, and if justice was not done, the bar association would step in.

MR Malik, who also serves as spokesperson for MP Maneka Gandhi, told TOI that the union minister had denied ever attacking the lawyer. This was merely a conspiracy to gain cheap publicity, Malik said.
