Five Nagapattinam fishermen missing

NAGAPATTINAM (TN): Five fishermen of Tarangambadi area in Nagapattinam district, who ventured into the sea for fishing on October 3, are stated to be missing.

Tarangambadi fishermen panchayat officials said 12 fishermen, five in a fibre glass vessel and seven in a mechanized boat, ventured for deep sea fishing from Tarangambadi. All of them were fishing 40 nautical miles east off Kodiakkarai coast.


On Tuesday night, the fishermen in the mechanized boat found five fishermen on board the fibreglass boat missing. After searching for them in the vicinity, they tried to contact them through mobile, but in vain.


They informed the Tarangambadi fishermen panchayat this morning, said Sankar, a member of the panchayat. An emergency meeting was convened and the Coast Guard requested to launch an intensive search operation to trace the missing fishermen, he added.
