Mumbai cops gear up for Ganeshotsav immersion bandoast

MUMBAI: With the threat perception after al-Qaida's latest announcement, the Mumbai Police are sparing no efforts to secure the city in every possible manner on Anant Chaturdashi on Monday. The entire strength of 47,000 personnel will be out on the streets including traffic policemen. Ten companies of SRPF and two of Border Security Force (BSF) have also been roped in. Women's security will also be high on the police's agenda with anti eve-teasing squads making rounds of visarjan spots in plainclothes. The recently trained batch of female beat marshals will also be on the lookout for harassers as they patrol on bikes.

"46 sensitive locations have been identified and will be monitored closely," said a senior official. "Ten percent of police personnel, in civvies, will be deployed for conducting anti-sabotage checks and to keept an eye on anti-social elements. We are also taking the help of 10500 civilians such as NCC, NSS cadets and NGO workers," said the official.


Nakabandis were conducted across the western suburbs on Saturday with special emphasis on two-wheeler riders. Cops are also paying special attention to communal harmony and counter terror operations for the Ganesh festival.


Special measures have been put in place for Lalbaugcha Raja with nearly a separate posse of officers deputed for bandobast.


During the bandobast, police took action against severao anti social elements. As per preventive arrests, cops detained 2179 persons under separate sections of law, in 690 cases against drug addicts, five drug peddlers and hundreds of addicts were caught.


The ati eve-teasing squads registered 16 cases and as per local laws 573 persons were detained, said police.
