Mahagenco's unit-8 at Koradi to fulfil power demand in state

MUMBAI: State power generation utility, Mahagenco, on Thursday began the process of synchronizing its 660 MW thermal unit-8 at Koradi — which will increase the power generation capacity across Maharashtra and cater to preventing power crisis in near future.

Said an official, "This is first of the three units to be synchronized. The unit-8 is expected to start generating at full capacity (commercial operations) in December. The two other units, 9 and 10, at Koradi are also expected to begin the synchronization process in a few months. So, the total generation capacity of the three units — which will be 1,980 MW — will be able to fulfill the increasing power demand in the state."

Mahagenco managing director Asheesh Sharma on Thursday gave the go-ahead for unit-8. The power generation utility has a total installed capacity of 11,237 MW across state, of which nearly 70% comprises of thermal capacity and the other are gas-based and hydro-electric projects.

The Koradi expansion project of 1,980 MW will be commissioned in phases. This project is the first "super-critical technology" based unit of Mahagenco. The plant has higher operating efficiency and coal consumed will be lower, thus helping in keeping the pollution levels in control.

Officials said 2 X 500 MW at Chandrapur and 250 MW at Parli will also be commissioned soon.
