MUMBAI: A 22-year-old sailor allegedly committed suicide onboard INS Mysore on Thursday by firing self on his head from a rifle, police sources said. The reason behind the suicide was not known.
Police said that several sailors found, Navin Yadav, lying in a pool of blood on Thursday and rushed him to Ashwini hospital of Defence in Colaba. Doctors pronounced Yadav dead before admission, said Krishna Prakash, additional Police Commissioner. He said, " Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. We are investigating the case and reason behind the suicide is yet to be established." Police said that they were probing if anybody heard the gunshots and who was the last person to speak to Yadav.
His cell phone records will also be examined.
Meanwhile, a Defence press statement said that a case of suspected suicide by a sailor on one of the ships was reported in the morning. "The sailor was rushed to the Naval Hospital, INHS Asvini but could not survive. Preliminary investigations in the case have been intimated and a Board of Inquiry will be convened soon," the statement said.
The Colaba police registered a case of accidental death and inspector Subhash Dudhgaonkar was investigating the case.
