IIT-B student had turned from music to spirituality: Friends

Mumbai: Aniket Ambhore, the IIT-B student who fell to death from the sixth floor of a hostel at the Powai campus, was drawn towards spirituality, his friends from the institute said on Sunday. Institute officials, during their interaction with students from his class and hostel, found that he used to spend time in writing songs and playing the guitar, and stayed aloof for a year. He, along with his friend, had composed and performed the anthem for Mood Indigo 2013, 'Char din'.

An institute official said, "Most of Ambhore's friends have said that he was very cheerful. They are all shocked by his sudden demise. The institute is counseling these students. They also said that he participated in music shows. He even performed at the last Mood-I event on the campus."

A friend from Hostel 13, where he was earlier, said, "In his free time, he would spend time practising the guitar and writing songs. But for the last few months, he spent his free time reading spiritual books. He had more free time as he was going through the academic rehabilitation program-me. The influence of books reflected in his general conversations too." Most of us loved him for his song-writing skills, said another student.

After his father, Sanjay, a bank employee, alleged that his son was being taunted at college for getting a seat under the SC/ST quota, the institute has spoken to most of his friends and colleagues. His father also said that he was undergoing treatment for depression.

Powai police senior inspector Y L Jadhav told TOI they were verifying all angles and were not sure if he had committed suicide or fell accidentally from the hostel's sixth floor.
