BEST suspends two staffers for assault, drunk driving

Mumbai: BEST has suspended two bus drivers for assaulting senior colleagues at the Mumbai Central depot and for drunk driving.

Officials said Bhagaji Thorat, who was found drunk, was sent for a medical examination on Saturday and his breath analysis report will be available on Tuesday. He will be charge-sheeted on Monday.

Shankar Mane (34) had consumed poison and attacked two senior bus starters with a sickle and injured a bus traffic inspector last Friday. His statement is yet to be recorded. "We will serve him a suspension order and charge-sheet him when he can talk. A probe will be conducted into both incidents, which have shattered the image of the department," a senior official said.

Mane will be interrogated by the Nagpada police to ascertain his motive. Officials said he had a dispute with bus starters over job scheduling and had objected to his regular conductor being deployed on another bus. He has been booked for attempt to murder and bid to commit suicide.

BEST has planned six measures after the two incidents, which occurred within 36 hours. They include: breath analysis tests for drivers before starting a journey, sessions with counselors, workshops on road safety, yoga camps, health checkups, rest rooms and good canteens.

Thorat, from the Malvani depot, was plying a bus on route 207 from Gaikwad Nagar to Dahisar (East), with nearly 60 passengers.

"It is an unpardonable incident and we will expedite the probe. He may be dismissed," an official stated. "It is the first such incident in BEST and is an embarrassment," he said.

BEST panel member Shivji Singh said better deterrents were needed for drivers. "We are known to be the best bus service in the country. Such incidents tarnish our reputation and should serve as an eye-opener to the bus administration," he added
