Took maximum action against corrupt: Ex-CJI Kapadia

MUMBAI: Former Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia on Sunday said he had taken maximum action against corrupt judges, more than any other CJI. He said, "I have transferred the maximum number of judges. I transferred judges from Kolkata, Bombay and Punjab high courts. I sanctioned the prosecution of a judge from Punjab, Nirmal Yadav."

The former CJI was reacting to former SC judge Markandey Katju's blog in which he claimed that he had informed then CJI Kapadia about a corrupt judge in Allahabad HC.

When contacted by TOI on Sunday, CJI Kapadia said, "Has Katju named the judge? It is not possible to remember two years later who he may be referring to. Whenever he (Justice Katju) came to me I had transferred many judges who he complained about and not promoted many judges as chief justices."

Asked about Katju's comment that many CJIs are "reluctant to expose corruption in the judiciary," Kapadia said, "That is his view and I cann't comment on it. I can only say that I have not brought to the SC any judges who were not fit. I have also not confirmed many judges in HCs. Look at my record."

Another former CJI, Lahoti, could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
