Ice bucket challenge takes web by storm

International celebrities take to pouring ice water on themselves for charity as part of the chilling dare. Hyderabad Times tells you who all did it and how!

If you're a social media regular, you must have come across videos of celebrities taking to pouring ice water on themselves as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge, to raise awareness and funds for ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

While Bill Gates 'stylishly' poured a bucket of ice water on himself by designing a nerdy high-tech contraption, after being challenged by Mark Zuckerberg, many other celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Beiber, Demi Lovato, Jimmy Fallon, Taylor Swift, and Jennifer Lopez among others, have being daring enough to take on the 'challenge for a cause'.

The disease, which was an intrinsic part of Tuesdays with Morrie — a memoir by American writer Mitch Albom, is a neurodegenerative disease in which the body's use of muscles shuts down, ending in the effective immobility and eventually leading to paralysis.

As part of the Ice Bucket Challenge — also known as ALS Ice Bucket Challenge -a person is supposed to dump a bucket of ice-cold water on one's head or donate 100 dollars for charity within 24 hours. Celebrities have done both. They also 'challenge' three more people to do so.

The cause gained popularity last month when golfer Chris Kennedy performed it and challenged his cousin to do the same to raise funds for a friend who has had ALS for more than a decade. Then, it went viral after Ethel Kennedy, the 86-year old widow of Robert Kennedy took part in the cause and challenged US President Barack Obama! Since then, the challenge has taken the Internet by storm. More than 15 million people across social networking sites have posted about, commented or liked a post related to the challenge, according to official figures. People also posted more than 1.2 million videos about the same.
