Crack in Mumbai building leads to evacuation of 48 families

MUMBAI: A day before Raksha Bandhan festival around 48 families of a building in Dombivli were evacuated after a crack was noticed on a column on Saturday. The two wings of ground plus-four-storey building that houses 48 families was built in 1982.

According to fire brigade officials, a resident of Bilbadan building noticed a 1.5-ft wide crack on a column on the first floor and alerted residents, who then called fire brigade and local civic officials of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal corporation engineers from the planning.

Fire officials who rushed on spot evacuated both wing.

The civic officials claimed that building was not on the civic body's list of dilapidated structures. Vinay Pandey, a civic official from KDMC said, "For precautionary measure we have shifted all family members in to nearby civic run Bhise school and we have also ordered for structural audit of the building and once the report will come after which we will take final decision about building weather to demolish it or not".

"Our Raksha Bandhan festival is ruined, we are now being shifted to an abandoned building without any kind of basic facilities," said a resident from the affected building.
