Abdul Hameed Ansari was suffocated to death by unidentified people, police said. The suspects used a handkerchief to suffocate the senior citizen, who stayed alone in his room in Yaqoob Manzil, Madanpura.
N K Mehtar, senior inspector of Nagpada police, said that the body was discovered by Ansari's grandson, Wahid at around 8.30 am when the latter came to deliver breakfast for the deceased. "Ansari was fond of fancy mobile phones. He possessed not very costly phones which are now missing. The accused apparently tried to unlock a cupboard using a screw driver but could not succeed. When we checked the cupboard it contained Rs 6.52 lakh, which was untouched ," said Mehtar.
"Wahid, who would come every day to deliver breakfast to Ansari found the door ajar and was surprised since the deceased himself would open the door every morning. When he entered the room he was shocked to see his grandfather lying on the floor, his hands and legs tied with rope. He shouted for help and the neighbors gathered there," said an officer from Nagpada police station.
The Nagapada police reached the spot with a sniffer dog. The body was sent to JJ Hospital for a post mortem. Ansari is survived by six children, three of them girls. His eldest son retired as a principal of an Urdu high school, second son works in Saudi Arabia while the third is employed in a bank. One of his daughters is working in MTNL. "Since there is no sign of forceful entry, we suspect the killer was known to the accused and the door was opened for him. We are investigating the robbery and personal enmity angles. However, we are not sure about the personal enmity angle. We don't want to take any chance," said an investigator. Cops have also brought a woman from the area who had reportedly asked for Rs two lakh loan from Ansari which he had refused some months ago. No arrest has been made yet.
