Wrestler back in ring after surgery

NEW DELHI: Three years ago when Devrat Choudhary suffered a ligament injury in his knee joint, he lost all hopes of taking part in a wrestling competition again. The 23-year-old, grandson of Chandgi Ram who won a gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games, was barely able to stand.

But thanks to surgery performed by doctors at Safdarjung Sports Injury Center, Choudhary has not just managed to make a comeback but has even won two major awards recently, including Bharat Kesari at All India Free Style Wrestling Championship. He is also looking forward to participate in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"When Choudhary came to our hospital, he could barely walk. He had suffered injury in the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), a strong band of tissue located within the knee which provides stability to the joint, during practice. We reconstructed the ACL by replacing the injured part with a strip of tendon from hamstrings," said Dr Deepak Chaudhary, senior orthopaedic surgeon and director of the center.

The surgeon said it took over six months of regular physiotherapy and exercise to help the patient get back on the wrestling ring. ACL, the doctor added, is one of the commonest sports-related injuries and earlier most sportspersons preferred going abroad for treatment.

"I was a young wrestler hoping to make a mark in the national championships when the injury happened. It was devastating and seemed like the end of my dream. But thanks to the surgery performed here and rigorous training thereafter, I could bounce back," said Devrat.

The Safdarjung Hospital's sports injury centre has a state-of-the-art gym, which helps patients

recover quickly by strengthening the targeted body parts through different exercises.

Doctors said tennis players come with injuries in the upper arm and the forearm while footballers turn up with problems of the thigh and leg muscles. Anil Kumar, a national-level wrestler, admitted at the hospital for elbow arthroscopy, said earlier they required to go to a private hospital for treatment where treatment was costly. "But the facilities here are high-end and minimum expenses are incurred," he said.
