Congress slams BJP over alderman right

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Congress has accused the BJP-ruled municipal corporations of adopting unconstitutional methods to capture power in different zonal committees and defying the provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

Campaigning in Varanasi for the ninth and last phase of polling, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh took a dig at Narendra Modi. "Narendra Modi talks so much about democratic traditions. What does he have to say about BJP's conduct in Delhi's municipal corporations?" He added that Congress will not accept these unconstitutional measures. BJP has dismissed the matter saying it is nothing but a political controversy being raked up by Congress.

Singh said the lieutenant governor had nominated 30 aldermen in all three municipal corporations. It has been specified in the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act that these aldermen can not only cast their votes but also have the right to contest for posts of zonal committee chairman and vice-chairman. He said the Act also specifies that they have the right to vote and contest for the standing committee elections. Opposition leaders the corporations -Mukesh Goel, Farhad Suri and Varyam Kaur- joined Singh to step up the attack against BJP.

Pramod Kumar, an alderman in the east Delhi corporation, said all 30 aldermen have sought time to meet the LG, and if required, they will protest to secure their rights. Some nominated aldermen had earlier approached high court as they were being denied voting rights in ward committee elections. However, the BJP leaders say these aldermen have never voted in the past. "Even the HC has given another date and hasn't postponed the elections," BJP leader Satish Upadhyay said. The ward committee elections are on May 12.
