New bridge to connect Kedarnath temple town

DEHRADUN: A 20m long bridge is being built on the Mandakini river valley near the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district to connect two newly-constructed helipads at Kedarnath with other side to ensure smooth movement of pilgrims.

A 70-member team led by DIG G S Martolia and Garhwal commissioner Suvardhan from different state departments is camping there to monitor the construction ahead of hectic preparations for Puja to be held at the Kedarnath temple on September 11.

Chief secretary Subhash Kumar said that the state government with the help of other agencies like the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Army decided to build the bridge three weeks after Almora SDM Ajay Arora he fell into the Mandakini after being slipped off from a make-shift wooden bridge and got washed away.

Kumar said the government plans to construct a motorable valley bridge to ensure smooth movement from both sides before beginning of the puja in Kedarnath. He said construction of the bridge is a part of an Rs 200 crore proposal to build a new Kedarnath township which includes Kedarnath temple's total makeover and the construction of a new pedestrian alternate route and motorable routes to Kedarnath.

Kumar said this proposal is a part of overall Rs 1400 crore plan to re-build and re-locate 278 of worst-hit villages in Rudrapryag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts.

"A team of government functionaries led by CM Vijay Bahuguna will put up the proposal of Rs 1400 crore before the Planning Commission on Tuesday to obtain its approval," Kumar said.

He said PWD engineers and technical experts have begun process of building the bridge after 27 tonnes of construction material was transported to Kedarnath from Rishikesh using IAF MI-17 helicopters.
