Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa denies model code violation

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalaithaa on Tuesday denied that she made any announcements of new schemes while campaigning for the AIADMK candidate P Saroja in Yercaud assembly constituency last week, a byelection for which is scheduled on December 4.

In response to the notice issued by the Election Commission of India, on Monday, Jayalalithaa said she only made a general statement that whatever was required for the upliftment of the people in the area would be provided.

"It would not be correct to link the unrelated general statement with the requirements which were brought to my notice," she said, while asserting that there was no violation of model code of conduct, as made out by the complainant.

The DMK had submitted a memorandum to the EC, alleging violation of the model code of conduct.

Refuting she had made any specific promises on any new schemes, Jayalalithaa urged the Commission to drop the action pursuant to her reply. "I emphatically deny that I made any specific promise of providing any one of the requirements which were brought to my notice," she said, adding "I repeat that in my speech, I only made a general statement that whatever is required for the progress of the people living in Yercaud constituency will be provided by the government."

On Monday, the Election Commission issued a showcause notice to the Tamil Nadu chief minister, seeking her explanation as to why action should not be taken against her for alleged violation of model code of conduct. She was directed to reply by 5pm on Tuesday.
