Shinde warns rebel MPs of disciplinary action

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday indicated that the Congress may not put up with "indiscipline" of its six MPs who have moved a no-trust motion against the government over the Andhra Pradesh bifurcation issue.

In an attempt to wield the stick against the "rebel" MPs, all of whom are from Seemandhra region, Shinde told news persons on Monday: "They are from a disciplinarian force. Any such case of indiscipline, the party will take care."

However, there are doubts if the Congress will carry out its threat of disciplinary action against the MPs, given the mood in the Seemandhra region, and the fact that Andhra is due for both assembly and Lok Sabha polls next year.

As per procedure, the no-confidence motion was to be taken up by the Lok Sabha the first thing on Tuesday morning. "The Speaker requested the leave of the House to take up the no-trust notice. Since, nobody was prepared to listen, the Lok Sabha was adjourned," said Shinde, who is also the leader of the House.

The Speaker adjourned the House for the day soon after it reassembled at 12 noon.

"It could not work out today. Let us see if the no-trust motion can be taken up tomorrow," he said.

In an embarrassment for the UPA government, six Congress MPs and 4 Telugu Desam Party MPs on Monday submitted notice for a no-confidence motion against the government to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar over the vexed Telangana issue.

The six Congress MPs representing Seemandhra have been opposing the UPA government's decision to carve out a separate state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh.

The Cabinet has already approved the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the motion for this is expected to be sent for the consideration of the state assembly by President Pranab Mukherjee soon.

While the BJP has not spelt out its stand over the no-trust move, the party has moved a motion against Speaker Meira Kumar over the 2G JPC issue.

The Congress is facing a lot of resistance from within, including from Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, against the move to create Telangana.
