Rajasthan assembly elections: After promising big, it's time to deliver for BJP

JAIPUR: After a thumping victory and grand celebrations, BJP will have to start working on implementing the promises it made in its manifesto. However, it will not be a cakewalk for the party to fulfil all poll assurances.

One of its major promises was to provide 5% reservation to socially backward castes like gujjar, rebari and raika under the ninth schedule of the Constitution. With the matter pending before the court, it will be a tough task for the party to fulfil its word on the reservation issue.

"This will be a daunting task for BJP as giving reservation within the 50% will not go down well with meena and jat communities. Going beyond the 50% will be overruled by the court," said Vishnu Mahan, a political expert.

Another promise of providing 24-hour electricity supply seems far-fetched as Rajasthan is yet to become self-sufficient in electricity generation. The dependence on Northern grid, which also provides power to other states, remains, and Rajasthan has earlier been forced to shut down its plants during peak season.

BJP's promise to generate 15 lakh jobs in five years, if fulfilled, will be among the highest job generation by any state in the country. However, to achieve such a feat is easier said than done.

The state faces several challenges in bringing about a complete industrialization and the government does not have the capacity to absorb 1.5 million work-force.

With RBI asking banks to clear its bad loans, banks will be reluctant to give loans on one per cent to farmers, a promise made by the party. On the issue of giving facilities, including housing, to Pakistani Hindu refugees, the state will need approval from the central government.

The party has also claimed to open a cow breeding ministry with special emphasis on cow conservation. So far, no such department exists in any state and breeding-related issues are dealt with by the animal husbandry department.
