Dhami was on run since after killing his old timer friend, Paramjit Singh Pamma, outside the Bradshaw Gurudwara in Sacramento, California, during a Sikh sports festival on August 31, 2008.
Another associate of Dhami, Gurpreet Singh Gosal, who had been arrested on the spot in Sacramento, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for 35 years on August 10, 2013.
The fugitive Dhami, who is a native of Jalandhar in Punjab, was apprehended near Mohali bus stand and slapped a case of residing in India on the basis of fake documents. Dhami, whose links with drug peddling is also being verified, are being interrogated by Punjab State Crime Branch officials in phase IV, Mohali.
DSP Bhupinder Singh told TOI, "Dhami is in police custody for next four days and he was wanted to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of US. We have recovered some fake documents included driving license, identity card from the possession of fugitive."
The fresh FIR against Dhami for possessing fake documents was registered at Sohana police station, Mohali. A senior Punjab police official said, "We have recovered credible information about the movement of Dhami in Jalandhar from FBI through Interpol and started monitoring his activities. Dhami tried to escape in police raid but netted cautiously."
According to Sacramento Division of FBI, Dhami had been successfully managed to escape to India and started residing while procuring fake documents in Jalandhar.
Earlier, a team of Punjab police had arrested a fugitive wanted in a hit and run case in Australia, Punnet Bansal, 24, following the tip-off of Interpol near Panipat on November 29. The fugitive Bansal was residing in Panchkula and planning to tie the knot with a girl shortly.
