Asaram's son hid at Ludhiana cowshed for 30 days

CHANDIGARH: A team of 22 Delhi Police cops remained camped in Ludhiana for 24 hours even as the self-styled godman Asaram's son Narayan Sai moved across different locations in Punjab's business town along with several look-alikes of him.

Sai was hiding at a gaushala (cowshed) owned by one of Asaram disciplies and local electronic goods dealer Pankaj Agnihotri in Ludhiana's busy Model Town Area.

"Out of the past 58 days, he was putting up at this cowshed for almost a month. One of Asaram's disciples guided us to this place" said Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of Delhi police (crime).

Sources in the police said that Sai was using as many as 132 SIM cards and six phones to duck the cops chase.

The first batch of 10 cops of the Delhi Police crime branch had landed in Ludhiana on December 2 in the posh Sarabha Nagar area, about a few kilometres away from Sai's hideout.

"When our team spotted Sai's location, he had already moved out of Ludhiana and was on the National Highway 1. Besides this was not in our charter to ascertain the owner of Sai's hideout. Our job was only to nab Sai," said SBK Singh, Delhi Police joint commissioner (crime).

More cops reached Ludhiana on Tuesday afternoon and dispersed around Preet Vihar, Model Town, Sarabha Nagar and Doraha Road areas of Ludhiana to keep a close eye on the movement of any vehicle from the cowshed or ashram.

Sources in the Delhi Police, however, said Sai left Ludhiana on Tuesday at around 9.30pm in an SUV Ford Eco-Sport bearing a registration number of Uttar Pradesh.

Another car of make Volkswagen Jetta, that trailed the SUV was being used, to ferry the look-alikes of Sai.

The Delhi Police had deployed its five more teams and alerted them on all escape routes and diversions of National Highway (NH 1).

The teams were deployed at Ludhiana, Rajpura, Zirakpur, Chandigarh, Ambala.

The Ambala team noticed the SUV on a stretch leading to Kurukshetra.

The vehicle was then followed, overtaken and stopped at Pipli near Kurukshetra.

On questioning, Sai, who had disguised himself as a Sikh, denied his identity until the other teams of crime branch reached at the spot and took him to Delhi.
