Teen gets life term in gangrape case

MUMBAI: A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act court on Tuesday sentenced a youth, Suraj Badve (19), to life imprisonment for raping a minor in 2013. Two other accused, Avinash Sadaphule (21) and Vishal Waghmare (19), were sentenced to five- and seven-year jail terms for their involvement in the gangrape of the 13-year-old Chembur girl.

In court, the girl said that she was in a relationship with Waghmare for nearly a year. She added that on the evening of the incident, which occurred on June 19, 2013, she had gone with her father to Chembur Camp market. There Waghmare gestured her to meet him later. After the girl met him around 9.30pm, they were joined by others. The group roamed till midnight. The girl told the court that Sadaphule suggested that they should all go to Waghmare's uncle's home. She alleged that after they had drinks, the three raped her. The girl said that at 5am they left the room and Sadaphule dropped her at Sandu Gardens, Chembur. She added that her sister had arrived there with a policewoman as her father had filed a missing person's complaint.

In her testimony, the survivor said she could not identify the accused. During cross- examination by defence advocate Anjali Patil, the survivor denied that the incident had even occurred and claimed that she had left her home as she was "fed up with poverty and her kin".
