"Is there anyone born who can divide Chhatrapati Shivaji's Maharashtra? Without Mumbai there is no Maharashtra and without Maharashtra there is no India," Modi said at a rally in Dhule district of Nashik region.
Without naming any party, Modi took a dig at the Congress, the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena that claimed the BJP had a hidden agenda in bifurcating the state.
"Till the time I am in Delhi, I assure you that nobody will break Maharashtra," Modi said referring to Uddhav's statement that the BJP's model of development for Maharashtra included breaking it into smaller parts and separating Mumbai from it. MNS chief Raj Thackeray had also accused the BJP of trying to lure industrialists based in Mumbai to shift their base to Gujarat at an election rally.
However, Modi did not refer to the BJP's stand on a separate Vidarbha state and this sparked a debate over whether what he said was related only to Mumbai or to Vidarbha as well.
"Election fever is making people who are on the verge of defeat speak lies. Congress leaders believe in spreading lies till the time people start believing them. But this will not happen now," Modi said. The prime minister alleged that the state government led by the Congress was responsible for the "suicide of farmers because of failed promises and inability to understand their issues".
On NCP president Sharad Pawar's statement that Modi was taking sabhas even in talukas, Modi said it only reflected the manner in which the 'two' parties were pained by seeing the huge turnout at his rallies. "The number of people attending the rallies to listen to me is causing restlessness among the parties. For me, being among the masses is a matter of pride," Modi added.
