PM Narendra Modi launches 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana', asks MPs to adopt a village

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the "Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana" and said he would also adopt a village in Varanasi, the constituency from where he was elected to the Lok Sabha.

Under the programme, each MP will take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in three villages by 2019.

'Adarsh Gram' aims to ensure 100% access to health, education, sanitation, schools, toilets, libraries and smart schools.

PM Narendra Modi had announced the scheme during his Independence Day address.

Launching the project on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Jayaprakash Narayan, PM Narendra Modi underlined the need to formulate schemes in accordance with the changing times.

"MPs must adopt villages and work towards development. My only condition is that the village should not be where the family of the MP, or his/her in-laws live," PM Narendra Modi said. For the MP's elected from cities, the Prime Minister urged them to look at a village that is close to their city.

"I too have to select a village for Varanasi. I received the guidelines. I will go there, discuss and decide," PM Narendra Modi said.

At the launch Narendra Modi said, "Mahatma Gandhi always fought for the right of villagers. The welfare of our poor is our dream. This scheme is for the poor and the farmers." "We are around 800 MPs, if every year we make 3 model villages by 2019 we will reach about 2500 villages," PM Modi said.
