India-Bangla joint Durga idol immersion cancelled

KOLKATA: India-Bangladesh joint immersion programme which has been held for years on Ichhamati river has been cancelled following a meeting between BSF and its Bangladeshi counterpart.

Normally, during the days of immersion, land and water borders are kept open so that citizens can come and witness the idol immersion. But the meeting this week led to cancellation of joint immersion and separate immersions will take place along the river border of each country.

Bangladesh, though an Islamic nation, has a Hindu population who worship and organize Durga Puja. For them the joint immersion was a major event and for that several thousands of people would throng the Taki border.

This time the joint immersion had been cancelled to thwart the unwanted entry of people from the other side of the border.

Border security will be strict during the immersion.
