‘I was offered Rs 70 lakh for election campaigning’

Wrestler-turned-actor Sangram Singh made a sudden visit to his village Madina in Rohtak, Haryana, earlier this week.

This time, he went not only to meet his parents but also to interact with the locals. He says, "I was happy to meet my parents after a long time. Haryana toh mera ghar hai aur jahan ke logon ne mujhe itna pyaar diya, mera farz hai ki unko main wahi pyaar doon. Haryana ka waasi hokar mujhe yahan logon ko aware karana hoga ki abh jo elections aa rahe hain, unmein woh sahi logon ko vote de."

So was he there to campaign for any particular party or any candidate, we ask. He says, "Nahi ji, mujhe politics se kuch lena na dena... bas Haryanvi hokar mujhe laga mera farz hai ki apne logon ko bataun kya sahi aur kya galat hai. In fact, I had got offers from various parties to campaign for them, but I refused. Some even offered me 70 lakh. Lekin, maine saaf mana kar diya. I thought it was better to spread awareness about whom to vote for in a simple manner rather than by attending rallies. I interacted with the youth in a few villages like Rohtak, Maham and Jind, where people appreciated and loved the way I spoke to them. Whatever I am today is all because of the love and support I have received from the people of Haryana. Unko lagta hai ki jab celebrity campaign karta hai toh woh sirf paise ke liye karta hai, lekin jab apna koi kuch bolta hai toh woh sach lagta hai. "He adds, "In the past, I have visited my village several times but this time the experience was different. Bahut maza aaya logon ke saath baat karke. I was addressing a gathering, when I spotted some people rushing to a candidate with a paison ki mala. I stopped and asked them, 'Yeh kisi ki shaadi ho rahi hai kya?' Unhone kaha, 'Nahi yahan elections ke liye khaas paison ki mala bik rahi hai market mein'."
