MUMBAI: A cleaner at a reputed school in the western suburbs has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl during school hours. The police said they have sufficient evidence to support the claims of the girl, who studies in the pre-primary section.

On Monday, around 11.30am, when the girl went to the toilet, cleaner Saby Chavan (25), and took her to the passage between the girls' and boys' toilets, and allegedly touched her inappropriately. He also threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident, said the police.

CCTV cameras have captured the accused near the girls' toilet; the survivor is also visible in the footage. However, as passage area was dark, it did not cover Chavan's act. The police are taking the help of expert to enhance the footage. Senior police inspector Abhay Shastri said, "We have sufficient evidences in the case."

The school claimed that two female attendants are posted near the girls' toilet and foyers, and the numbers are higher in the pre-primary classes.

In the evening, when the girl complained of pain in the lower abdomen, her mother took her to a doctor, who said "something had happened" with her. The mother then asked the girl if something was wrong and she told her about the sexual assault. The mother approached the police on Tuesday afternoon and filed a case.

At the police station, the survivor identified her perpetrator's photograph and narrated the incident. Based on her revelation, the police checked the CCTV footage and found the accused was present on the floor at the time of the incident. Police will record statements of the school staff and teachers to establish the sequence of events.

The school authorities said that they are cooperating with the police.
