Chavan’s U-turn on files left us stunned: Ajit

MUMBAI: Senior NCP leader and former deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Wednesday demanded a high-level probe into the files of leading builders and developers cleared by Prithviraj Chavan during the last two months of his chief ministership.

"I feel that all those proposals should be probed at a high level. I am in the process of invoking the Right to Information Act," he said. He added that these proposals were apparently gathering dust in Chavan's office for well over three years. "We were told that they were bad in law and can't be approved. Unexpectedly, Chavan suddenly realized that there was nothing illegal, and cleared all the proposals. We were stunned and shocked by his sudden change of mind."

Pawar also hit out at the CM for creating an atmosphere of suspicion over the "so-called" irrigation scam. "At a meeting on irrigation potential, when it was submitted that in the last 10 years, less than 0.1% additional land had been brought under irrigation, instead of stating that he would seek more information, Chavan directly announced a white paper, for obvious political reasons. Now the entire inquiry has been complete and it has been established that more than 5% additional land has been brought under irrigation. My contention is that if I am guilty send me to jail, but just to settle scores, don't take such decisions."

Pawar also claimed that Chavan was misleading the people of Maharashtra about how the ruling alliance broke up. "NCP is in no way responsible for President's rule in the state. We involved Ashok Chavan in our seat deliberations, but he appeared to be helpless. All along, Prithviraj Chavan was never available for discussion. Either he was in his home town Karad or in New Delhi. Under such circumstances, it will be wrong to blame NCP for snapping ties with Congress."

On Chavan's statement that BJP and NCP are hand-in-glove, Pawar ruled out joining hands with BJP after the elections. "I am sure we will secure a clear majority and will not require anyone's help to form the government."
