Cantonment traffic curbs from today

HYDERABAD: The Army is gearing up to implement nighttime traffic restrictions on civilian vehicles on five major roads around AOC Centre from 10 pm on Thursday.

"Though we had announced total ban on civilian vehicles on these stretches from January 1, we have put the decision on hold after receiving objections from Malkajgiri Lok Sabha MP Ch Malla Reddy, Secunderabad Cantonment MLA G Sayanna and the representatives of residential welfare associations (RWAs)," General Officer Commanding, Andhra Sub Area, C A Pithawalla told TOI.

"We have asked residential welfare associations to constitute a five-member committee to chalk out modalities to avoid inconvenience to road-users," the GOC added.

Meanwhile, in an official release, the Army clarified that: "Total restrictions on traffic will only be put once suitable alternative routes for civilian commuters are made available and constructed."

The GOC also assured the people that the Army would honour the high court judgment in letter and spirit and provide all necessary assistance to all the government agencies concerned for additional infrastructure, if required.

Soon, representatives of RWAs would meet GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar and request him to appoint a senior engineering wing official as member on the committee.
