Officials of the Election Commission of India admitted that they have received a letter from the Samajwadi Party, and are examining it. When contacted chief electoral officer of Uttar Pradesh, Umesh Sinha, said, "No specific direction has been issued so far."
Senior SP leaders told TOI that party's national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav had sent a letter to the Election Commission of India to ensure that Yogi Adityanath does not campaign in the byelection. "The party has already written a letter to the ECI requesting it to take action against BJP MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Aditynath, who is fanning communal passion. And now, we demand that he should be banned from campaigning," SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.
Bypolls are to be held in 11 assembly constituencies and for the parliamentary constituency of Mainpuri. SP leaders alleged that Adityanath is continuously making provocative comments, and since the BJP MP has become more high-pitched, that a ban should be imposed.
Party leaders also categorically stated that if the ECI does not take any action in this regard, then it would chalk out its next course of action, after chief minister Akhilesh Yadav returns from the Netherlands. They alleged that BJP withdrew from the issue of "love jihad" during its state executive meeting as a part of clever strategy, but "it was fuelling the issue behind the curtains through frontal and non-frontal organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Yuva Vahini and Bajrang Dal.
