Foremost among the rebels is Vilas Undalkar, the septuagenarian representing Karad South constituency since 1980, who has revolted and will contest as an independent against chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. Chavan will also face Ajinkya Patil, son of Bihar governor D Y Patil, who will contest on a Shiv Sena ticket. The BJP has fielded Congress rebel Anil Bhonsle, making the fight tougher for Chavan.
Shrikant Sarmalkar, a former MLA who left the Shiv Sena in 2005 with Narayan Rane but returned two years back, has rebelled again. Sarmalkar stays in Kherwadi in Bandra and was considered close to Matoshree, but filed his nomination as an independent from Bandra (E) after he was denied a party ticket. Matoshree falls under this constituency and Prakash Sawant, current Sena MLA, has been nominated again.
In Mumbai, Sena MLA from Dahisar, Vinod Ghosalkar, is finding the going tough, with local corporator and former mayor Shubha Raul turning a rebel. Ghosalkar had differences with Raul, another Sena corporator Sheetal Mhatre and BJP corporator Manisha Chaudhary. The issue was taken up before party chief Uddhav Thackeray but was unresolved.
On Friday, when the Sena declared Ghosalkar's nomination, an upset Raul left the party and joined the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena immediately, and filed her nomination against Ghosalkar. "Why all major positions are with him? Ghosalkar is vibhag pramukh of the area, his son Abhishek is a corporator and he himself is an MLA. Is there no single functionary to taken care of party except him?" a Sena functionary from the area said. Ghosalkar has to fight three female corporators in the election: MNS's Raul, BJP's Chaudhary and Congress' Sheetal Mhatre.
Sena rebel Anant Tare, a former deputy leader of the party, filed his nomination on a BJP ticket from Kopari-pachpakhadi (Thane) and is in a direct fight with Thane's Shiv Sena head and MLA Eknath Shinde. Former NCP MLC Manda Mhatre is contesting against party heavyweight Ganesh Naik in Belapur in Navi Mumbai on a BJP ticket. Sitting Congress MLA from Panvel in Raigad district, Prashant Thakur, who was a member of Rahul Gandhi's youth brigade, is contesting on a BJP ticket. Bharti Lavhekar, formerly with the NCP, is the BJP candidate from Versova in Mumbai.
Vaibhav Naik, son of former Sena leader from Navi Mumbai Tukaram Naik, has joined the BJP. He did so after he was denied a ticket by the Sena from Airoli. He will take on Sena's Vijay Chaugule and his cousin and NCP candidate Sandeep Naik.
BJP's Janak Sanghvi, a former corporator from Chira bazar has filed his nomination as an independent. He was denied a ticket for the civic elections in 2012. Suresh Koparkar, a Congress corporator, who was denied a ticket from Bhandup (W) has filed his nomination too.
Similarly, Rajan Teli, a close aide of Congress leader Narayan Rane, is contesting on a BJP ticket from Sawantwadi. He shifted camp to the BJP recently after a brief stint in the NCP when he was denied a ticket. Minister of state for urban development and NCP's sitting MLA from Ratnagiri, Uday Samant, joined the BJP and is the party's candidate from that constituency.
Sanjay Deotale, a Congress minister, will contest from Warora on a BJP ticket after he was denied a ticket by the party and instead offered it to his sister-in-law.
Sameer Meghe, son of former Congress MP Datta Meghe, who was till recently president of the Youth Congress in Nagpur, is now the BJP candidate from Hingna. Similarly, NCP legislator Kisan Kathore switched sides and is contesting as a BJP nominee from Murbad. Amal Mahadik, son of Congress MLC Mahadev Mahadik, is crossing swords as a BJP nominee with minister of state for home, Satej Patil, in Kolhapur South. Former Congressman Sunil Deshmukh, who rebelled against the Congress in 2009 after being denied a ticket from his home turf Amravati, is now the BJP nominee against Congress' Rajendra Shekhawat, son of former President Pratibha Patil.
