Four days to get your name on voters’ list

Starting today, you have four days to enrol your name on the electoral rolls. The election commission has kept its voter help centres (VHCs) open across assembly segments even on Sunday for the purpose. The commission's efforts are primarily aimed at ensuring maximum voter turnout. Past records have shown a poor 45% to 54% voter turnout in the city against around 60% in the state.

This is the first election during which the commission has left such a small window for voters' registration. It is aimed at reducing the election period to 33 days from the usual one and a half months.

"Confirming your name on the electoral rolls to ensure your right to vote is a must. If you have a voter's ID but your name is not on the list, you will not be able to cast your vote," said Nitin Gadre, chief electoral officer.

"The application form can be downloaded from the website but it must be submitted in person with your identity and address proof as well as photographs. Understand that constitutionally it is the voter's responsibility to ensure his enrolment in the voters' list and not that of the government machinery," said an election commission official.

"We have registered voters in large numbers since the Lok Sabha election and have added some of the deleted names. We have left no scope for people to complain about missing names, provided they have ensured their registration. Besides, we have also decided to keep voter help centres in each assembly constituency open on Sunday to facilitate registration," said an official. Addresses and contact numbers of these centres across assembly segments are available on the website ceo.maharashtra.gov.in.

The commission has, so far, registered 8.3 crore against 8.01 crore eligible voters in the state. The number has increased due to duplication of voters, said officials.

"We are not dealing with duplication now to avoid controversies such as missing names," a source said.

"For every issue such as shifting of address or missing name, there is only one solution: Confirm the name first using the helpline or SMS service. In case a name is absent from a list, immediately download the application form and take it personally to the centre in your assembly segment for submission on or before September 17," said an official.

Documents for age and address proof include passport, PAN card, driving license, Adhar card and electricity bill.

During the previous elections, the best voter turnout in the city was seen in Magathane, Shivadi, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar and Andheri. Assembly pockets that recorded the worst turnout included Colaba, Mumba Devi, Dharavi, Sion-Koliwada and Mankhurd.
