From the current academic year, the varsity adopted the 75:25 score pattern for undergraduate students. Seventy-five marks will be set aside for internal assessment that will be made up of two components, a 20-mark test and five marks will be allotted for 'responsible behaviour and performance in class'. The earlier score pattern had been 60:40, which was changed after some colleges were accused of "generously awarding internal marks".
However, BMM students say the new pattern is unsuitable for their course. "With the new system we hardly have any practical component left. We are studying only theory, which is not what the course is meant to be. So we decided to boycott the internal exam as a sign of protest," said Abhishek Shinde, a first-year student. The students assembled on premises at 8.30am wearing black clothes to show their displeasure.
The principal of Kirti College, Vishnu Magre, said boycotting the exam was not correct. "We understand that there is a problem. However, we are conducting the exam according to the university norms. We tried to make them understand but they went ahead with their protest," added Magre. Students from other colleges are picking holes in the pattern. "A media course cannot be only theory oriented but the new score system has left us with no marks for projects," said Nicole Paralkar, a third-year BMM student of Ruia College, Matunga.
Ancy Jose, chairperson of the university's Board of Studies for BMM said a request to review the score pattern had been sent to the officials. The varsity's pro-vice-chancellor, Naresh Chandra, said, "We have received the request and we will discuss the point in the next committee meeting."
