Terrorist alert sparks drive to evict squatters

NEW DELHI: Central Delhi police and civic agencies carried out a massive anti-encroachment drive around Jama Masjid area in wake of terror alerts ahead of Independence Day on Wednesday evening. More than 100 shops and illegal vendors were removed from the roads leading to the historic mosque during the drive, police said.

While police officials said the action was needed after several complaints of illegal encroachments were received by the civic bodies and a drive would ensure free passage for pedestrians, sources said intelligence agencies have informed the Delhi Police about a possible terror attack in one of the crowded markets around the venue during Independence Day celebrations.

"Small-time shopkeepers and hawkers have been removed in areas like Meena Bazar, Urdu Bazar, Matia Mahal and Motor Market. Areas in vicinity of Jama Masjid and Red Fort were especially targeted," said Alok Kumar, additional CP, central district.
