Shoe thrown at Punjab CM: Accused is AAP convenor

LUDHIANA: Hours after an unemployed man allegedly threw a shoe towards Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at a function in Isru of Khanna about fifty kilometres from here, police said that the youth is convenor of Aam Aadmi party in Dhanaula, Barnala.

The man was identified as 36-year-old Vikram Kumar of Dhanaula in Barnala.

Sources said that the chief minister had come to observe the death anniversary of Kartar Singh Isru, freedom fighter of the village when the man hurled a shoe towards him but it missed the target.

DIG Ludhiana Range, Gurinder S Dhillon told TOI that the accused is convenor of AAP in Dhanaula and that his aim was to grab attention to generate funds and to rise in hierarchy. He added that the accused who joined AAP few months ago and was working at a cloth shop, was accompanied by three other members including Hardeep Singh, Mahinder Pal Dhanjian who recorded the footage of the shoe-throw drama.

The DIG claimed that the accused had recorded the video and was aiming to circulate it to the media to gain publicity. He added that since foolproof security measures were in place, the shoe did not reach the chief minister.

A senior police official said that the accused was arrested from the tent only at around 1.30pm whereas his accomplice managed to flee. He added that the chief minister had just started to deliver his speech when they carried out this incident.

The DIG said that the accused has been put under preventive detention and police are exploring legal angles to book him under criminal offence. He added that efforts are being made to nail the other accused.

A senior police officer said that police are also probing the involvement of senior AAP leaders in the incident.

Meanwhile, sources had said that youth also raised slogan 'Inquilab Zindabad' before he was arrested by police. They added that the man was perhaps upset because of unemployment.
