Doctors confirm Lalu needs heart surgery

MUMBAI: Former Union minister Lalu Prasad will definitely need a heart operation, said doctors of Asian Heart Institute in central Mumbai on Tuesday.

However, they didn't specify details about the kind of surgery that will be needed.

Lalu, who is reportedly suffering from multiple heart problems, was admitted to Asian Heart Institute in Bandra Kurla Complex on Monday for a complete checkup.

The tests carried out throughout Monday were supposed to help doctors decide which problem should be tackled first. While a section of media reported that the former Bihar chief minister's heart valves need attention, there has been no confirmation on the same.

On Tuesday afternoon, Asian Heart Institute medical director Dr Vijay D'Silva said, "Based on the preliminary reports, we can now confirm that cardiac surgery is needed."

He added that Yadav is "fundamentally a healthy person, as can be seen from the intense campaigning he has done." Yadav has been in touch with senior heart surgeon Dr Ramakanta Panda for the last two months due to chest pain.

"A few reports are pending. The details of what kind of surgery is needed will be available to us only after these reports come in," Dr D'Silva added. A health bulletin will be released later in the day.
