Customs seizes 14kg gold in three different cases

MUMBAI: The Customs officials at the Mumbai airport seized about 14kg of gold early on Saturday morning in three different cases.

Between April and July this year, the Customs had seized a total of 403.52 kg of the yellow metal in 497 cases whereas during the same period last year the gold seized was comparatively less—61.46 kg in 79 cases.


The first seizure on Saturday morning took place when a domestic passenger, Mohamed Akram, arrived from Goa by flight AI-330. He was found to be in possession of yellow and silver-coloured chains which were later identified as gold. The items weighed 2.4 kg and was valued at Rs 64 lakh. The metal was handed over to him by one Mohammed Tanweez Sheikh after he arrived from Dubai. Both the passengers have been arrested.


In the second case, based on inputs received from Chennai DRI, a domestic passenger, Fayas Hussain Shaikh, was intercepted on his arrival by Air India flight no. 569. The Customs officials recovered two garlands containing 22 packets, which had 32 gold cut pieces and 8 gold bars—all of which weighed 10.79 kg of gold and was valued at Rs 2.3 crore, said an official. The gold was handed over to him in Chennai by an international passenger who had come from Muscat.


In the third case, the Customs recovered 1.4 kg of gold worth Rs 38 lakh from Abid Mohammed Kashif who had arrived from Dubai.
