The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the Saradha money trail, has already unearthed 70 new accounts of Saradha through Subhajit.
While looking into high-value transactions of the group, investigators found that when the Saradha ship was sinking, money flowed mostly into two-three group company accounts. CBI believes Sen used Saradha Realty, Saradha Housing and Saradha Tours & Travels accounts to receive money. For example, a few days before he went into hiding, Sudipta received a lot of money in a private bank account from a company that does business in India and Pakistan.
Subhajit used money from Saradha Realty to continue buying and selling some of the world's costliest cars, say investigators. He drove around in six cars — a BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Mitsubishi Pajero, Hyundai Sonata and a Honda Civic. At one point of time, he got into cars so deeply that he started putting money into it. But like his other businesses, it also failed miserably.
The major portion of Saradha money amassed from small depositors across Bengal was regularly routed through Subhajit to his numerous abortive ventures, including tinsel town and the glamour world. If his father Sudipta Sen was a money-gathering machine, Subhajit was an equally big spender. He was a regular in the night club circuit and pumped a lot of money into many abortive Tollywood projects, CBI officers say.
Most of this money was not routed through bank accounts, but in hard cash, say agency sources, adding that he thought nothing of spending lakhs of rupees on a single night. During 2009-11, Saradha invested heavily in a number of Tollywood productions and Subhajit controlled the funds flow. The majority of these projects were abandoned midway but Subhajit accessed these accounts to carry out his transactions, his CA revealed during questioning, say CBI sources.
