On Sunday afternoon, women came out with their bikes and other two-wheelers to display their driving prowess. The rally, which was held Saket and Ghaziabad, saw some men riding pillion while the women drove. Gurpreet, a housewife from Janakpuri, told us, "It was my mother-in-law who asked me to participate in the rally. I was not confident but she motivated me to come here."
Another biker, Sanju, had come all the way from Loni to participate in the rally. She said, "I have been riding a bike for the last six years and it feels great. One doesn't have to depend on others for moving around and people look at me with awe on the roads. There is the problem of eve-teasing, but I know how to tackle that."
Ritu from Faridabad told us, "I had come here last year with my scooty. But when I saw women on their bikes, I decided to buy a Bullet, especially for participating in the rally."
Mahesh Bhatt, Shahnaz Husain, Shrenu Parikh, Vimla Mehra, DG (Prisons), South Delhi mayor Sarita Chaudhary and former table tennis player Indu Puri were present to flag off the rally in Saket, and mayor Teluram Khamboj was present in Ghaziabad. Bhatt said, "For women empowerment to happen, women should be given wings and those wings should be in the form of wheels. The sight of a women on a bike is more intimidating for a man that the sight of a women in a car."
