The couple, along with Lalji Singh from Mumbai, was among the three tourists from the state who had drowned after an overcrowded boat capsized off Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday. "Chandrashekar was a real estate agent, and his wife had taken voluntary retirement from the BMC to pursue dance and music," said Madhav Savargaonkar, a relative. Chandrashekar was also a local BJP worker.
On January 1, the couple, their son Harshad, daughter-in-law Pratima and daughter Nivedita took a flight to Port Blair for a holiday in the Andamans. "The couple was fond of travelling and would always go on an annual vacation, sometimes with their children. They were socially active on various public platforms and did charity, including help build a dam in Shahpur," said a neighbour.
Of the 28 rescued in the incident, seven are from Maharashtra-Harshad, Pratima, Nivedita, Shreeprakash Sharma, Poonam Singh, Shreepee Singh, and Shaleen Singh. Port Blair officials said all the survivors from the state were sent home on a special flight.
Lalji Singh, the deceased from Mumbai, was a native of Uttar Pradesh. "His body has been flown directly to New Delhi," said I A Kundan, head of state disaster management cell. "We have also moved a file seeking compensation for the deceased from Maharashtra."
While a case of overcrowding was registered against the ferry owner, a magisterial probe was also announced.
"We are in touch with the authorities in Maharashtra and have taken due care of all survivors. It was a registered ferry, but was carrying tourists over its mandatory capacity," said Jawahar, deputy commissioner, Port Blair. We have also moved a file seeking compensation for the deceased from Maharashtra," said I A Kundan, head of state disaster management cell.
