On display will be the iconic Andy Warhol Dollar Sign, estimated at £180,000-250,000, from the Jade Jagger collection, a recently rediscovered early David Hockney self-portrait estimated at £100,000-150,000, and Gerhard Richter's Untitled estimated at £60,000-80,000. Also on display will be a work by leading Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki, estimated at £300,000-400,000. These will be showcased alongside Sotheby's Indian Modern Art Highlights.
The exhibits, brought to India for the first time, are from Sotheby's forthcoming London sale of contemporary art and New York sale of modern and contemporary South Asian Art (MCSAA).
Yamini Mehta, senior director and Sotheby's international head of modern and contemporary South Asian Art London and New York, said, "We believe there is a real hunger amongst Indian collectors to experience well-known international contemporary artists."
Hockney's self-portrait has remained in private collection for over half a century. Painted when the artist was only seventeen, the work is of historical importance and offers an insight into his artistic development.
From the collection of Jade Jagger, Andy Warhol's 1981 Dollar Sign, is a striking example of one of his most iconic images that is immediately recognisable. With Warhol's great fondness for Jade, it's no surprise that he dedicated the work to Jade on the reverse as an affectionate gift from the father of pop art to the daughter of a pop star (Mick and Bianca Jagger).
Painted in 1984, Gerhard Richter's Untitled watercolour echoes a distinctive experiment of abstract art that the artist was using for his largescale canvases during this period. Following the major retrospective at the Tate Modern, London, in 2012 Gerhard Richter is established as one of the greatest living artists.
One who deftly combined both the eastern and western artistic traditions, Zao Wou-Ki is China's most celebrated artist whose work (painted on November 1988) displays a delicate balance between abstraction and figuration.
