NEW DELHI: To make sure the entire Delhi Police personnel is up to speed with the new amendments in criminal law and the recently introduced POCSO (Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences) Act 2012, the force has started a unique training exercise at police stations. Teams of legal experts, comprising an assistant public prosecutor and a police inspector, would go to all territorial police stations and inform officers, from SHOs to sub-inspectors and beat constables, on how to handle cases under the new laws and provisions.
Special commissioner of police (training) S N Shrivastava said the training would help officers understand the legal procedures for treating victims and accused as per the new laws. "As it is not possible for everyone to come to the Police Training College, we decided to form six teams for going to each and take classes inside police stations."
The training programmes started on Monday from the Parliament Street and Daryaganj police stations. The mobile training teams aim to cover all stations by February-end. Constables, sub-inspectors, head constables, SHOs and other inspectors would attend classes from 2pm to 5pm.
The focus will be on POCSO and amendments in laws under the Indian Penal Code. The constables would be taught how to respond to distress calls, track criminals along with gender sensitization during the three-week module. It will also feature motivational talk and stress management.
Constables who have completed four years in service will also have a refresher course. Delhi Police will also train for sub-inspectors among the training programmes to be introduced this year.
Subjects like how to handle a terror attack, check vital installations as well as security on VVIP routes are part of the refresher course for constables.
