LPG deliverymen rape Mumbai woman

MUMBAI: Police on Wednesday arrested two gas delivery men for allegedly raping and performing unnatural sex on a 19-year-old homemaker at her residence in a chawl at MIDC Andheri. The accused — Chandan Jaiswal (19) and his accomplice Mohammed Alam Shaikh (35) — committed the crime on Tuesday after making their way into the survivor's home on the pretext of checking whether the gas cylinders were working properly, MIDC police told TOI.

Before leaving the house, the two robbed her gold jewellery and some other valuables from a bag. "The survivor called her husband, who is employed with a private bank, and narrated the episode after she regained consciousness an hour later," an investigator said. "Her neighbours did not hear any sounds from her home when the crime took place."

Deputy commissioner of police (Zone X) Mohankumar Dahikar confirmed the accused were employed with an Andheri gas agency. Based on the complaint registered by the survivor's husband, police nabbed the two. They have been booked under the Indian Penal Code's sections 34 (common intention), 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offence) and 392 (robbery). The accused have been sent to police custody till February 6.

The survivor, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, moved to Mumbai after her marriage five months ago. Jaiswal, the main accused, befriended her after learning they both hailed from the same town.

"I allowed Jaiswal to enter the house without knowing his intentions," the survivor said in her police complaint. "He, along with his accomplice, said they had come to check whether there was any leakage in the gas cylinders."

The survivor got suspicious on seeing Jaiswal make eye contact with his accomplice. "I asked both to leave," she said. "They immediately asked me to show them gas book receipts, to make an entry in their log book. When I entered my bedroom, they bolted the door and charged at me. One of the accused overpowered me and shut my mouth while Jaiswal raped me and performed unnatural sex with me, before the other took over."

The accused fled after the survivor fell unconscious, but not before stealing her valuables.

Investigators said Jaiswal took advantage of his rapport with the homemaker. "During his previous visits to deliver gas cylinders, Jaiswal learnt the survivor's husband and brother-in-law leave for work at 8am and return after 7pm," said an investigator. "He told us he thought the survivor had fallen in love with him and, therefore, planned to commit the crime with an accomplice."

The accused were caught based on the description and the names the survivor provided to police.
