Gang's fourth crime in just eight days: Police

NEW DELHI: The robbery plot looks straight out of a Bollywood flick. Six men stalked and intercepted the car at a busy stretch, looted Rs 8 crore and disappeared without a trace in just 16 minutes. Police are clueless about the culprits, but they do know that it must have taken meticulous planning and fine execution to pull off such a heist.

Police know that the gang was involved in an abduction-cum-robbery on January 22 where they used the Hyundai Verna they left behind on Tuesday. That evening, businessman Rameshwar was waiting for his friend on a Mundka road when the gang came in the Verna and abducted him. They robbed him of Rs 1.3 lakh, thrashed him and dumped him 20 km ahead in Kanjhawala. Incidentally, this car was stolen from outside a banquet hall in west Delhi on January 21.

On January 24, they snatched a WagonR from a Vaishali businessman. This car, too, was left behind at the crime spot in Lajpat Nagar on Tuesday. Police say the gang has committed four crimes in the last eight days, and they believe the latest robbery was being planned for about a fortnight or a month. The previous robberies may have been attempts to gather cash to buy weapons for this robbery; the seizure of various numberplates, gloves and a four feet lathi from the Verna points to that, police suspect.

Going by the modus operandi, police suspect professionals did the job. "They were clever enough to drive the two cars in different directions after the robbery and did not bother to shoot anyone during robbery which shows they did not panic," said a source.

Local intelligence and CCTV footage have revealed that the robbers followed the Honda City from Kalkaji and had precise knowledge about its movements. "An insider's role is very believable as we were informed only at 9.30am and 9.50am through two PCR calls. The delay indicates an insider was involved. We are also probing Hawala tip-off angle," a police source said.

Right now, suspects are many, including slain gangster Neetu Dabodia's man Friday, Paras, who had recently fled after drugging four policemen at Old Delhi railway station. Another Haryana gang whose kingpin is in Rohtak jail is another strong suspect.
