‘Disco king’ Bappi Lahiri may join BJP

NEW DELHI: Music director and singer Bappi Lahiri seems to be planning a new career beyond the film industry. The "disco king", known for his mega hits in the 1980s, is keen to join the BJP, it is learnt.

Lahiri, or 'Bappi da' as he is popularly called by fans, has approached the party and the BJP's central leadership is considering the matter, sources said, adding that a decision is expected soon.

The 62-year-old Lahiri, born to musician parents in Kolkata, moved to Mumbai when he was 19 and has had a long and successful career as a music composer and singer in the Mumbai film industry. He is best known for his foot-tapping numbers for Mithun Chakravarty, who earned fame as a "disco dancer" in the 1980s.

With Mithun set to enter Rajya Sabha on a Trinamool Congress ticket, it will be an interesting chapter in the lives of both film celebrities who seem to be starting their political careers at the same time.

Lahiri's joining BJP will be in line with the trend started by late party leader Pramod Mahajan, who had brought in quite a few film celebrities to the party for the 2004 Lok Sabha polls. According to a party source, BJP plans to keep inducting popular names into the party in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
