NEW DELHI: Ghaziabad seems to be showing the way by launching crackdown on unregistered transport firms and agents including movers and packers. While regional transport offices in other parts are yet to take such a step to end operations by fly-by-night operators, Ghaziabad RTO has challaned over 15 such agents. These agents control about 85% of goods transported across the country.
"We are taking action as per the provisions of Carriage By Road Rules notified by the central government. We want all agents operating here registered with us. There have been complaints against some unregistered operators," Ghaziabad RTO Sanjay Mathur told TOI. He added in the next fortnight they will start a drive to register all operators. "This is a positive development. We have been approached by transport agents on how to go about registration. Even corporate houses are going ahead with the plan to engage only the registered players. All this is happening despite a lobby of truckers opposing mandatory registration," said S P Singh of Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training.
