Church-goers turn to APSMC for help

HYDERABAD: The AP State Minorities Commission (APSMC) on Saturday appointed a lawyer to look into the matter of a church being reportedly sealed off in Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical Diseases, also known as Fever Hospital complex, in Nallakunta.

According to APSMC sources, a petition was received recently from Patrick Francis and Albertina, members of the Christian community, along with a representation from legislator Jayasudha. The petitioners had requested the intervention of the commission after authorities at the hospital locked the doors of St Rock Church, thereby preventing entry of worshippers. They added that the church was being used as a store room.

Though the hospital authorities responded to the commission's notice, officials described the response as unsatisfactory. "Officials are refuting the existence of the church.

This has prompted us to appoint an advocate to look into the case and begin a fact finding mission. Old photos and witness accounts also indicate the presence of a church," APSMC chairman Abid Rasool Khan said.

Meanwhile, APSMC has come down heavily on recognized aided and unaided schools in 15 districts. Notices have been sent to various schools, instructing them on proper facilities including arranging for teachers, text books and libraries.
