Six arrested for robbing Rs 65L from Greater Kailash-II home

NEW DELHI: Six days after robbers barged into a house in Greater Kailash-II and took off with cash and jewellery worth Rs 65 lakh after holding the owner at gun point, police have cracked the case. One of the accused was a carpenter who had earlier worked at the southeast Delhi house.

The southeast district police arrested six of the eight robbers while the crime branch arrested the seventh accused on Wednesday afternoon. "We have recovered Rs 10.25 lakh cash, 1kg gold jewellery, a car, a country made pistol and a live cartridge," said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police, southeast district. The prime conspirators have been identified as Guddu (35) and Danish (28) who works as a carpenter, and their associates Shafiq (19), Ashutosh (30), Mahender Yadav (26) and Puneet (30), Karunakaran added.

A team led by additional CP (crime) Ravindra Yadav arrested another accused, Mukarram, from Uttar Pradesh after camping there for two days. They have recovered several lakhs from him. Police had leads on the whereabouts of the eighth accused Faruq by late Wednesday evening. Mukarram and Faruq helped the robbers divide the booty and hide it. On August 22, the robbers barged into 66-year-old Ashok Rakiyan's house. Rakiyan was at home with his father and one Bablu—the domestic help. Around 1.30pm, the men arrived at the house in an Alto car and a motorcycle. While three of them waited outside, two of them went inside to ask for a trust form for distributing books.

According to sources, Danish and Guddu were addicted to gambling and needed around one lakh to pay off their debts. For this, they hatched the plan to rob Rakiyan's house and roped in the others. They chose the date and time of the robbery based on information given to them by Danish.

Danish was familiar with how Ashok Rakiyan's father distributed books to poor children through his trust and used it as a means to enter the house. They fled to Faridabad after the robbery. "Based on a tip off, a team led by SHO Rajender Pathania arrested Danish near CR Park and later nabbed the others based on the information provided by him," Karunakaran said.
