Call it bureaucratic inertia — no one seems to have bothered to change the format of the medical form in which a column seeks information about injuries or disability, if any, suffered during World War II.
In serial number 10 (3) C of the form, a copy of which is with the TOI, the candidates have to declare if they "suffered from any illness, wound or injuries sustained while on active service with his majesty's forces during the last great wars".
The last 'great wars', in which any Indian participated under the British rule, were fought between 1939 and 1945.
"This is ridiculous, nobody who had served his majesty's forces would be eligible for government service at this juncture," said Ravinder Singh Dhull, a high court lawyer whose relative had to give such an undertaking.
The declaration has to be made by selected candidates before undergoing medical examination which is conducted after their names are recommended by the Haryana State Public Service Commission for appointment in group A or group B services.
"I was shocked to read the column in the medical examination form. It appears to have not been updated for decades by the Haryana babus. Even my father was not born when our country was under his majesty's rule," said a 25 year-old-girl, who has been recently selected as law officer in the state prosecution department.
The medical examination is conducted in the civil hospital of the district concerned and the form is provided by the office of the chief medical officer.
