MUMBAI: For the first time, the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation has insured the Govindas -many of whom are critically injured and some even die -while forming human pyramids during the dahi-handi ritual on Thursday.
A total of 44 Govinda mandals have registered for the group insurance scheme. The 3,624 registered participants will be insured for permanent or partial disability, death, loss of limbs and hospital expenses.
The decision to provide group insurance to the Govindas was taken at the general body meeting of the civic House recently. The insurance cover will also provide an immediate cash help of Rs 15,000 to each of the participants who sustain injuries.
The municipality will spend Rs 30 per govinda for the insurance.
