While no arrests have been made yet, the grey SUV, which was used as a getaway vehicle, was found in Thane. Investigators said that it was a tourist vehicle hired from a travel agency in Thane's Wagle Estate.
"After we got the Innova's registration number, we got the owner's name and address from the RTO. He turned out to be the proprietor of a travel agency based in Wagle Estate," said an officer. The shooters had hired the SUV for a day. The police examined the vehicle on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Gosalia alias Ajay Ganda went to Infinity Mall in Malad to meet an acquaintance. Around 4.10pm, he left the mall with his bodyguard and was looking for an auto when three men fired at him. One of the rounds hit Gosalia in the neck, another on his hand and the third in his stomach. The mall management and Gosalia's bodyguard rushed him to a nearby hospital.
Gosalia told the crime branch that his meeting at the mall had been fixed at the last minute and very few people, including the friend, knew about it. Subsequently, they picked up the friend. The Bangur Nagar police are checking Gosalia's phone call records and recent financial transactions. Sources said Gosalia has not been divulging much information to the police as he is "close to a few crime branch officers". The crime branch has been questioning Gosalia's business rivals since Wednesday.
